Nature for Catchments Launchramp (NCL)
Development of a pipeline of investable Nature-Based Solutions projects to mitigate recurring river flooding in Cyprus and Greece.
Location
Greece and Cyprus
Aim
Build back better with Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), by working with public actors (cities, regions and national authorities) and financiers to identify and design NBS that: 1.) support economic recovery & flood resilience; 2.) boosts biodiversity; 3.) is bankable, implementable and replicable.
Challenge
Recurrent river flooding and related economic losses (e.g. infrastructure damage, disruption to business operation and public sector services)
Solution
Nature for Catchments Launchramp (NCL) is a project origination process that addresses key financial, technical and political barriers to NbS. It results in regional-scale NbS interventions that align stakeholder interests (e.g. flood risk, water quality and availability) whilst restoring and creating habitats and ecosystems. Application of the NCL results in:
1. A pipeline of investable NbS projects. Solutions will likely include following measures: water retention basins, recreation of floodplains, reforestation and urban improvements.
2. Innovative financing solutions allowing public sector stakeholders to create a sustainable and long-term source of financing. Involvement of the private sector is always explored.
