Sustainable Infrastructure Asset Class and Pilot phase of SuRe® Standard Implementation

Multi-stakeholder approach to developing and testing the SuRe® Standard

Location

Global

Aim

In this project, GIB developed and tested the SuRe® Standard for sustainable and resilient infrastructure. SuRe® is the standard for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure. It is a third-party-verified, voluntary standard, which has been developed through a multi-stakeholder approach incorporating inputs from developed and least developed countries. The standard assesses infrastructure throughout the project life cycle at the design, built and operational phases. SuRe® covers a breadth of sustainability issues under the themes of society, the environment and governance, and is applicable to all infrastructure sectors. SuRe® aims to (1) improve the quality of projects so they are built on sustainable and resilient principles, and (2) to assist investors to identify responsible investment opportunities. SuRe® has been developed by GIB and Natixis with the support of many international stakeholders.

Challenge

Mainstreaming sustainability and resilience criteria.

Solution

GIB has spearheaded the multi-stakeholder approach to developing and testing this standard. This has included coordinating inputs from more than 60 stakeholder groups internationally, and then piloting SuRe criteria on more than 10 infrastructure projects in developed and emerging economy states.

GIB has also engaged with key institutions related to infrastructure development in a number of countries, including India, where we have strong connections with financial, public and private entities responsible for planning, preparing and executing infrastructure projects. With these groups we have worked to embed SuRe thinking into the infrastructure development process. To this end, we have delivered a range of capacity building and technical assistance to selected projects to enhance understanding and implementation of sustainability and resilience principles in infrastructure projects.
